Elsy Jacobs: The Grand Duchess
Born in Garnish, Luxembourg in 1933 Elsy Jacobs was a trailblazer. The Luxemburger cyclist played a key role in the growth of women cycling when it was just flourishing in France, Great Britain and the URSS. The Luxemburger rider became the first ever Road World Champion in 1958, as she finished first the 59-kilometre course in Reims, almost three minutes ahead of Tamara Novikova and Mariya Loukchina (URSS), who claimed silver and bronze medals respectively. 1958 was a very fruitful year for Jacobs as she broke the women’ Hour Record (HR) on November 9th 1958 setting a 41.347km mark at Vigorelli Velodrome.
