15 May Durango-Durango Emakumeen Saria Preview (WE 1.2)
Basque Country great cycling week gets underway on Tuesday with Durango-Durango Emakumeen Saria, an UCI internationally ranked one-day race that serves as the appetiser of Euskal Emakumeen Bira and that is held in the comarca of Durangaldea, in the province of Biscay. This year the 16th edition of the race will be held under UCI 1.2 status but with a very similar participation to Emakumeen Bira.
As in previous editions, the race will be held on the eve of the first stage of Emakumeen Bira. Dutch rider Marianne Vos (WM3 Energie) is the current record holder of the race having won it four times, in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014. While Spanish legend Joane Somarriba is the best Spanish rider with three victories in 2002, 2003 and 2004.
Tuesday, 16 May 2017, local time from 15:00 until 17:50 approx (UTC+2)
Route 110km: Durango – Durango
Same race course as in the 2016 edition of the race. Starting and finishing in Durango riders will have to cover five laps to a circuit that features the characteristic climb to Miota, before entering the final circuit where the international peloton will have to cover a long and short lap facing Goiuria climb twice as the QOMs of the day. Goiuria climb will likely be the key point of the race as it will cause important front selection due to its two sections of nearly one kilometer each at average gradients of more than 10%. Due to the final ascent to Goiuria with only 10 kilometres to go and its undulating course, we expect a reduced group finale, with small group sprinting or a solo breakaway reaching the finish line in Durango.
